The simplest method to explain Paddy is that he is pumped when it come to working in the field and the concept of failure is not within his mindset. He takes after his sire, Poplar Forest Play It Again Sam, as a very smart and driven Labrador gun dog. Six weeks of training was all that was required for Paddy to pass the first leg of his Junior Hunter test. We started Paddy's JH testing in Minnesota and their water series were more on the senior level than junior level. Paddy surprised us with his performance and I could tell that he was bummed because they only let him do two land and two water retrieves per day!
Paddy learns by watching and working out. We let him watch us train other dogs and he picks up what we are doing and what the other dogs should be doing. Learning by watching makes training easy for us and we wish that all dogs that we have handled were as driven as he. Paddy's memory skills are keen: We launch a memory bird and then the second bird for him to retrieve. When he returns with the second bird, he sits and faces where the memory bird landed. If you rotate his body away from the memory bird, he points his head towards the bird and you can almost hear him saying to himself inside "Dude, the bird is over there, did you forget once again where the bird landed?" The only problem that we have with Paddy is that we do not have as much energy as he and can't keep up with him! Paddy is worthy of achieving his Master Hunter title early on and we are looking forward to guiding him on his journey
With Paddy at your side, no birds are left behind.
