Lia is a sweetheart and an awesome mother. When Lunker went to Eukanuba in December 2014, Lia had puppies 2 weeks old and she, with the pups, stayed at Grandmother Caroline's house while we were gone. Caroline has been involved with dogs for umpteen years and she was amazed by how well Lia took care of the pups in our absence. As Lia's puppies mature, she takes time to mentor them by teaching what is right and what is wrong. When the puppies go outside to play, Lia is right there with them playing recess mom to insure nobody gets REALLY out of line. What is really sweet with Lia? She teaches her puppies to be lovers and to take care of each other. It is a common sight to look over towards the puppy play area and see the puppies cleaning and kissing each other.
In the ring, Lia does well with judges who prefer Labradors that are structurally built for what they were bred for: working and retrieving in the field. Lia is average height, a little on the long side, muscularly strong with a slight tuck. She moves around the ring like she does in the field: graceful with minimal effort exerted on her behalf. No, she is not barrel chested nor has legs so short that it appears the grass is too tall and needs to be mowed on a daily basis. Lia's body weight proportions are nearly ideal: 60% on the front legs and 40% on the rear legs. Why is this important? Elbows and shoulders take a lot of the impact when a dog is working in the field. Too much pressure (weight) on the front legs will cause premature injuries in the elbows and shoulders. We are always surprised when Lia gets into show mode: in 2013 she earned a Sporting Group third place and in 2014, an Owner Handled Best in Show!
In the field, Lia reveals her intelligence by how she works the field and retrieves her marks. Shs is a fast learner and we believe she took online classes in trigonometry at night when we were sleeping. Why? Lia can calculate the trajectory of a bird shot in flight and mark the landing spot even before the bird has fallen. How does she do it? Has to be those online classes! Lia also has a good nose: if you tell her you want a duck, she will retrieve a duck even if the field she is working has both fallen ducks and geese. Currently Lia is working on her hunt titles and it will be interesting to see how far she goes.
Lia is a loving teacher and a sportive mother that we all dream of having
