Some of our Values
Health Clearance Testing
Our dogs go through extensive clearance testing to insure their soundness. Hips and elbows are x-rayed per OFA standards; genetically inherited traits including exercise-induced collapse (EIC), centronuclear myopathy (CNM) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA-prcd) are performed to insure no dog is infected with these traits; eye health is monitored via CERF testing.
Puppy Upbringing
Puppies go through various fear stages in the first year of their lives. When their eyes open, they see everything and are overwhelmed with all the newness. Their second fear stage occurs about weeks 7 to 8 and this is when they realize that it is a BIG world out there. We prefer to keep the puppies in their family unit until they are 10 to 12 weeks old and their second fear stage has passed. Yes, it is more work on our behalf and yes, puppies bond with their owners beyond week 8 even though you have been told they will not (mainly by breeders who do not want to take the extra time to mentor their puppies).
Training
Fawn Brook Labradors does most of their training in-house. In 2014 we had the #2 and #6 ranked Owner-Handled Labradors in the USA. For field training, we train our dogs up to the Senior Hunter level. For training to the Master Hunter level and beyond, we utilize professional trainers.
English Labradors that prevail in the ring AND in the field
Fawn Brook Labradors is a small kennel whose charter is built upon the premise of evolving the breed by producing Labradors that follow the (Labrador Retriever) Standard and have the drive to retrieve a bird in any situation. This is easier said than done and only a handful of kennels have been able to achieve the goal of producing Grand Champion Master Hunter Labrador Retrievers. We strive to become a member of that elite group of kennels.
